Epidemiological Survey of Paragonimus Westermani in Chunsung County, Kangweon Province, Korea

Abstract

|
A survey of Paragonimus westermani infections among general population in Chunsung county, Kangweon Province, based on the intradermal tests, have been carzied out during a period from May, 1975 to March, 1977 and demonstrated the Parago~aimus met:cercariae from crayfish collected at thc; surveyed areas. A total of 2,189 residents was examined, the prevalence of Paragorri;raus westermrai was found to be 4.3 per cent and a significant difference in the sex specific rate was observed. The rate for Paragonimus westermani in the age group from 0 to 9 was 0.7 per cent and 20 to 29 group incre<~sed with a high value of 9.0 per cent. The demonstration rate of Paragonimus metacercariae from crayfish was found to be 2.0 per cent. It was found that Chunsung county is one of the newly found endemic areas of Paragonimus westermani on the basis of the positive intradermal reaction of the residents examined and demonstration of the metacercariae from the crayfish intermediate host ct lung Hulce.
